Puno is a city in southeastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca. It is the capital city of the eponymous Puno Province and Puno Region; in 2017, it had a population of 135,288. The city was established in 1668 by viceroy Pedro Antonio Fernández de Castro as capital of the province of Paucarcolla with the name San Juan Bautista de Puno. The name was later changed to San Carlos de Puno, in honor of king Charles II of Spain. Puno has several churches dating back from the colonial period; they were built to service the Spanish population and evangelize the Quechua people.

When you visit Puno, you'll be greeted by some of the warmest and friendliest people in Peru. The city is known for its rich cultural heritage and traditional festivals, such as the Candelaria Festival, which is celebrated in February. During this festival, the city comes alive with music, dancing, and vibrant costumes.

Puno is also home to some of the most stunning natural landscapes in Peru. Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, is a must-see attraction when you visit Puno. You can take a boat tour of the lake and visit the floating islands of Uros, which are made entirely out of reeds.
